At Orion, we’re committed to impacting the communities where we live and work. Education continues to be one of our core values for both our people, and for creating a fair and equitable society. Below is a sample of our Education related initiatives.
Computer Labs in High Schools
Orion supports technology education in high schools. In March 2022, Orion committed to sponsoring a technology lab at a top-ranking science high school in Istanbul, donating 15 computers to their new computer lab. Burak Salk, General Manager of Orion Innovation Türkiye made a keynote presentation to a lecture hall full of students (ages 15 to 17) and hosted a panel of IT, HR and software developers from Orion to discuss opportunities in the software industry.
New York Cares “Stand with Students” Initiative
It is estimated that the trauma of COVID-19, combined with school closures and inconsistent remote learning, equated to at least 12 months of lost learning for students of color (30% more than their white peers) in the New York City area over the last year. The 2022 school year will be one of the most critical for New York City’s students.
Orion stands with students to rebuild a more equitable New York City. We sponsored New York Cares’ “Stand with Students” program, a year-long New York Cares initiative designed to combat the inequities facing students most impacted by the pandemic within three focus neighborhoods (South Bronx, Central Queens, & East Brooklyn). Orion sent volunteers to assist with the New York Cares “Stand with Students” Backpack Event in Harlem on August 11, 2021, where volunteers assembled approx. 5,000 backpacks of school and hygiene supplies at the Salvation Army in East Harlem – view the short video of last year’s Backpack event and read our blog about this initiative.
Entrepreneurial Development of At-Risk Youth
Orion supports A Chance In Life in their mission to serve at-risk youth in our communities. Developing leadership and entrepreneurial skills in youth can build confidence and change the trajectory of their lives. Orion was proud to sponsor and attend A Chance in Life’s 76th New York Annual Gala in 2021, celebrating education and entrepreneurship.
Community Development in Eastern Europe
As a member of the Information & Communications Technology community, Orion collaborates with leading universities in Russia, in the cities of Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan, where employees teach specialty courses, host seminars, lead conferences and hackathons and mentor students. For 12 years, Orion has coached summer school students at Lobachevsky University and provided IT training. In 2019, employees led a career guidance program for recent college graduates, organized by the Chamber of Commerce of in Nizhny Novgorod. Our engineers starred in short videos, where they described their job duties and shared work-related specifics.
