When developing IoT-enabled products, the way customers interact with them has to be a major consideration. Our Experience Design experts helped a major American Manufacturer build a consumer application to interact with their smart HVAC products. The client is a major American manufacturer of residential and commercial heating and cooling products with a global presence. Challenge The client included connectivity components in their industrial products. These IoT-connected devices needed seamless interface for customers to control and interact with their smart devices. Solution The client partnered with Orion Innovation to develop an application that combined a unified design language with a powerful AWS-powered backend. Our Experience Design experts developed a robust design system and component library that would ensure scalability across all the company’s digital touchpoints. Key Focus Areas: Navigation: Standardized hierarchical menus and predictive search functionality for enhanced user accessibility Wayfinding: Enabling discovery at the page level, ease when resuming the user journey between sessions, and anticipating user needs Flow: Fixing user drop-off between experiences and eliminating loss of context Layout: Standardizing and organizing UI components Consistency: A unified experience and set user expectations. With these 5 areas of focus, the design language developed was used to create a prototype of the application. It was shown to the client and with their approval, the application went forward to production. In parallel, the AWS-powered backend enabled the application to deliver real-time communication between product and mobile application, with key capabilities including device scheduling, usage reporting, push/SMS/email notifications, demand response partner integration, multi-user account sharing, and voice control via Alexa and Google Home. Impact The client now enabled their customers to control their products remotely through an IoT-enabled, Bluetooth-connected, sleekly designed application. The fleshed-out design language and component libraries will also help streamline the development of new digital products.
