Developing advanced healthcare solutions with IoT and wearable technology for continuous monitoring is a major space for innovation in the Healthcare industry. Orion expedited this by creating a cutting-edge platform with IoT and cloud technologies, facilitating real-time vital sign monitoring through a user-friendly app and web interface.
The customer is an American start-up that wanted to develop a state-of-the-art healthcare solution based on IoT and wearable technologies. A miniature, non-invasive biosensor on a patient’s body would provide a full range of the user’s vital signs, which would be monitored through a user-friendly web interface or mobile application.
Challenge
Orion joined the customer’s team to help in navigating the development cycle, from creating algorithms and infrastructure to designing a web portal for mobile clients using both iOS and Android. The team was asked to complete the project within a short time frame because the customer intended to bring the solution to market as soon as possible.
Solution
Orion quickly assembled a team and applied the latest cloud computing technologies to build an innovative platform with unique capabilities in continuous vital sign monitoring.
The monitoring platform is based on the principle of reflectance pulse oximetry with proprietary innovations in sensor design, low power consumption, wireless communications, signal-processing algorithms and data processing.
An ultra-small, low-power wireless sensor is easy to place and wear. Data from the sensor is streamed to a mobile app over Bluetooth 4.0 (BLE) and then to the cloud web service using WiFi or 3G. The end-user can access real-time measurements of vital parameters via the application over their iPhone, iPad, Android device or web browser.
Impact
The team completed the project on time and met all the customer’s requirements. Apart from monitoring main vital signs, the solution calculates steps and burned calories and detects specific movements — like falls — making it ideal for medical purposes, achieving personal fitness goals and remote monitoring of children.
Shortly after the platform launched, our engineers extended the functionality of the solution, making it even more competitive within the rapidly growing mobile fitness and healthcare market.
