Rappi is a Colombian on-demand delivery company, founded in 2015, initially providing delivery services of food and groceries from restaurants and supermarkets to consumers via an online app (similar to DoorDash and Uber Eats).

Challenge/Opportunity

The challenge was that customers were paying cash on delivery.

To capitalize on the customer database the core business had delivered and maintained, the company decided to change their strategic approach and focus on providing financial services to both existing and new customers. Rappi not only needed to enhance features to its existing platform, they also needed to develop a completely independent platform enabling them to transform into a Fintech company that can issue credit, debit, and prepaid cards. With a presence in more than ten countries in South America, the company’s goal was to launch their Fintech offering in four countries within two years.

Solution

The Orion team, engaged in 2019, was comprised of global and local associates to build and implement the needed features to the existing platform as well as architect and build the new one. This multidisciplinary agile team focused on:

Result

The new platform developed by Orion, RappiPay, was launched well within the two year goal set by Rappi. This accelerated time-to-market enabled Rappi to issue debit and credit cards to users in more than 150 cities in five different countries. Additionally, those users could open a credit/debit/prepaid account directly from their mobile device. The partnership and collaboration with Orion has revamped Rappi’s business, transforming them into a completely digital bank in the region, with a global technological platform complying with local business requirements and regulations.
